Only way i found to bypass it is using tetherme and a VPN but, like you said having to use a VPN sucks. My problem is a bit different from yours but fuck T-mobile.

26/04/2008 · Isn't TMobile's tethering cap shared/synonymous with their high-bandwidth cap these days? The T-Mobile One plan they rolled out this month limits tethering to 3g speeds. So yes, you're sharing your "unlimited" data but at a much slower rate.
